Magnesium and sleep: what we actually know

If you’ve typed “magnesium for sleep” into a search box at 3am, you’re not the only one. It’s one of the most common questions women ask us.

The honest answer: magnesium is a mineral you already get from food, like leafy greens, beans, and nuts. There is research on magnesium and sleep, but very little of it studied women in perimenopause. That’s why every article you find says something different. It isn’t settled yet.

What you can do in the meantime is get specific. Notice when you wake, and whether you wake hot. Write it down for two weeks. Take that pattern to your own clinician, along with a list of everything you already take. That’s a better conversation than “I’m not sleeping.”
